A complete, platform-by-platform installation guide with system requirements, offline installer instructions, and post-install setup tips for getting the most out of Chrome from day one.

Google Chrome is the world's most popular web browser, used by over 3.4 billion people across every major platform. Installing it takes just a few minutes on any device. This guide covers every platform with exact system requirements and step-by-step instructions.

Download Google Chrome for Windows

System Requirements

Installation Steps

  1. Visit google.com/chrome using your current browser
  2. Click "Download Chrome"
  3. The installer (ChromeSetup.exe) will download — it's approximately 1.5 MB (it downloads the rest during installation)
  4. Double-click the downloaded file
  5. Click "Yes" when Windows asks to allow changes
  6. Chrome will download, install, and open automatically

Offline Installer

If you need to install Chrome on a computer without internet access:

  1. On a connected computer, visit google.com/chrome/?standalone=1
  2. Download the full offline installer (~100 MB)
  3. Transfer the file via USB drive to the target computer
  4. Run the installer — no internet connection required

Download Google Chrome for Mac

System Requirements

Installation Steps

  1. Visit google.com/chrome and click "Download Chrome"
  2. Open the downloaded googlechrome.dmg file
  3. Drag the Chrome icon to the Applications folder
  4. You may need to enter your administrator password
  5. Eject the Chrome installer from Finder's sidebar
  6. Open Chrome from Applications or Launchpad

Note: Chrome automatically detects whether your Mac uses Intel or Apple Silicon and downloads the appropriate native version. The Apple Silicon version runs significantly faster on M-series chips.

Download Google Chrome for Linux

System Requirements

Installation Steps (Debian/Ubuntu)

  1. Download the .deb package from google.com/chrome
  2. Open a terminal and navigate to your Downloads folder
  3. Run: sudo dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb
  4. If there are dependency errors, run: sudo apt-get install -f
  5. Chrome is now installed and will be added to your application menu

Installation Steps (Fedora/RPM)

  1. Download the .rpm package from google.com/chrome
  2. Run: sudo rpm -i google-chrome-stable_current_x86_64.rpm
  3. Or use: sudo dnf install google-chrome-stable_current_x86_64.rpm

Chrome automatically adds Google's repository to your package manager, so future updates arrive through your normal system update process.

Chrome on Chromebook

Chrome comes pre-installed on every Chromebook and is the primary browser for Chrome OS. It updates automatically and cannot be uninstalled. Chromebooks receive Chrome updates on the same schedule as desktop platforms.

Post-Installation Setup

After installing Chrome on any platform, these steps will help you get the most out of it from day one:

1. Sign In with Your Google Account

Click your profile icon in the top-right corner and sign in. This syncs your bookmarks, passwords, history, open tabs, and settings across all your devices instantly.

2. Set Chrome as Your Default Browser

Navigate to chrome://settings/defaultBrowser and click "Make default." This ensures all links from emails, documents, and other apps open in Chrome.

3. Enable Enhanced Safe Browsing

Go to chrome://settings/security and select "Enhanced protection" for the highest level of security, including real-time phishing detection.

4. Import Bookmarks from Your Previous Browser

Go to chrome://settings/importData to import bookmarks, passwords, and browsing history from Safari, Firefox, Edge, or any other browser.

5. Install Essential Extensions

Visit the Chrome Web Store and add your preferred extensions. We recommend starting with an ad blocker (uBlock Origin) and a password manager if you don't use Chrome's built-in one.
